?Gala? and ?Fuji? apples show a long growth period in Southern Brazilian conditions, resulting shoot growth above of 1 meter per season, increasing the summer and winter pruning necessity. The strong vegetative growth in this condition has a negative on budbreak by increasing of apical dominance. The use of growth retardants like prohexadione calcium may control vegetative growth, contributing spray and light penetration into the tree. With the objective to define the best concentrations of prohexadione calcium on vegetative growth control in apples were done experiments in Gala and Fuji cultivars during two growing seasons. The concentra-tions studied were 0, 165, 330, 495, 660 and 990 mg.L-1of prohexadione calcium by Viviful® use (27.5% of ingredient). The applications were done in three times spaced by 30 days, being sprayed 1/3 of each concentration by each application time. The first application was done when the shoots had almost 10 cm. The evaluations were fruit production, fruit diameter, fruit length, fruit shape, total soluble solids, starch index, fruit firmness, fruit color, weight pruning, number of shoots pruned and mean shoot length. The results indicated that prohexadione calcium application decreased the weight pruning, the mean shoot length and number of shoot pruned in relation to untreated trees in both cultivars studied, however did not show differences between treatments on fruit quality parameters. The highest values of fruit production were obtained when sprayed 330, 495 mg.L-1of prohexadione calcium.
